PROJECTS

wildlife rehabilitation

Modgaji cheetah release and rehabilitation

We invite you to become a part of a unique conservation project bordering the Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area and forming part of the Baviaans Mega Reserve.  Volunteers will partake in the whole spectrum of Reserve development; conservation management and animal rehabilitation. Hundreds of years back, wild game roamed these vast areas of the Karoo, but due to human impact, their numbers dwindled.  Through concerted conservation practices, passion, participation, and reintroduction our goal is to restore land and wildlife back to its original splendour.

This programme is targeted at persons wanting to experience behind the scenes on a wildlife reserve, and do meaningful work with the rehabilitation, release and monitoring of animals, back to the wild.  Participants will also be involved in the maintenance and conservation on the reserve.

The Modgaji conservation and animal rehabilitation programme welcomes motivated volunteers with a passion for wildlife and conservation in its ongoing conservation work.  With the contribution of volunteers this great area, with surviving species such as leopard, kudu, baboon and many other indigenous animals will be brought back to how nature intended it to be.

The Modgaji project has been working with a number of world renowned conservation bodies.  Past initiatives of the Modgaji Project have resulted in the successful release and rehabilitation of Cheetah, Lion, Brown Hyena, Caracal, Spotted Hyena, Serval, and Cape fox, African Wild Cat, Elephant, Black and White Rhino & Buffalo on several Reserves around South Africa.

The Project is extremely “hands on” and needs your help for the continued success of the project. An experience of a lifetime that will remain with you forever.

Wild cat rehabilitation

A diverse project, with each day bringing about new challenges and developments. Volunteers get involved in all aspects of the reserve and have to understand immediate tasks to be done are not dictated by man and a flexible attitude to assisting with what may come is a great mindset to enter this physical profession with from the outset!

Aspects include animal care (feeding, monitoring, and Ethology studies of animals kept in captivity or undergoing rehabilitation), vegetation management, fence patrols, and social involvement to name a few.

Conservation and education

South African National Parks and Forestry

Teaching posts for English and Mathematics tutors, living in the forest during the week in the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma region. Weekends are yours to choose between the Plettenberg Bay house or your forest home with our support and logistics.

Cape Nature: Robberg Peninsula Nature Reserve and World Heritage Site involve mammal counts, seals, dolphins, whales and marine estuary data capturing.

Re-forestation

This project covers every aspect of a botanist’s world, but will also appeal to anyone with an interest in conservation and nature.  Participate in activities from clearing alien vegetation, compost making, seed collection and germination to planting and the re-establishing of indigenous forests.

The project is based here on the Garden Route, situated in one of the most bio-diverse regions on the planet.  We plan to expand this project to other areas of South Africa.  Our aim is to not only plant trees, but to create a healthy sustainable bio-diverse environment.

This is very much an outdoors and physical project with enormous moral satisfaction. All work is scientifically coordinated with GPS locations of trees planted and companion /symbiotic relationships created where possible.

This project is linked to our Climate Change programme – The Green Ticket.
